The film is partially based on a robbery story known as the "pizza bomber" incident. The actual bank robbery took place on August 28, 2003, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Pizza delivery driver Brian Wells entered the bank armed with a shotgun disguised as a cane and a bomb attached to his neck, handing the teller a note demanding $250,000 in cash.
