A filmmaker named Allison arrives at a lake house in the Adirondack Mountains, hoping that the quiet will help her find inspiration for a screenplay. The couple hosting her, Blair and Gabe, welcome her warmly, but Blair soon suspects that Gabe is paying their guest too much attention. A dinner together brings tensions to the surface, and the three slip into a game of desire, jealousy and manipulation, with the line between real life and creative invention growing unclear. Lawrence Michael Levine wrote and directed Black Bear, which was released in December 2020 and runs 106 minutes.
The film stars Aubrey Plaza as Allison, Christopher Abbott as Gabe and Sarah Gadon as Blair, with Paola Lázaro, Grantham Coleman and Lindsay Burdge in supporting roles. Plaza also produced, alongside Marina Grasic and Richard J. Bosner. It was made by Oakhurst Entertainment, Blue Creek Pictures and Tandem Pictures, and was Levine's third feature as director, following Gabi on the Roof in July and Wild Canaries.
On IMDb, viewers rate Black Bear 6.5 out of 10 from around 18,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 305 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 161 reviews places it noticeably higher with reviewers than with the wider audience.
