Short description
A family on holiday at an isolated cabin in the woods is confronted by four armed strangers who take them hostage. The intruders claim they have been shown a vision: unless the family chooses to kill one of its own, the world will end. Cut off from the outside world, the parents must work out what they believe and what they are willing to do before it is too late. The film is based on Paul Tremblay's novel The Cabin at the End of the World.
M. Night Shyamalan directs from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Sherman and Steve Desmond, and he also produces. It is the thirteenth of the fifteen films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Old and Trap. Dave Bautista plays Leonard, the group's leader, with Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge as Eric and Andrew, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Sabrina, Rupert Grint as Redmond and Abby Quinn as Adriane.
Made for a budget of 20 million US dollars, the film took about 55 million US dollars worldwide, a solid multiple of its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from 141,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from 3,209 votes. The critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 344 reviews sits close to those audience figures, so viewers and reviewers landed in much the same place.
What's left behind the scenes
- M. Night Shyamalan cast Dave Bautista in one of the roles, impressed by his performance in Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi action film "Blade Runner 2049" (2017).
- When the Four Horsemen appear in the film, seven knocks are shown on the door. According to the Book of Revelation, the end of the world will be marked by a seven-year period of tribulation, and Jesus Christ will be given seven sealed scrolls. When the fourth scroll is opened, the horsemen will appear – in a specific order. The first horseman – Pestilence – rides a white horse. Leonard was the leader of the four, and is shown in a white shirt. The second horseman – War – rides a red horse. Rory himself is ginger, is shown in a red shirt, and is very impulsive and aggressive. The third horseman – Famine – rides a black horse. Adrian wears black, she is passive and constantly nervous. The last horseman is called Death, and he rides a pale horse. Sabrina wears a pale yellow blouse, and she is in despair.
