Spencer Barnes is a tightly wound advertising executive whose life is organized down to the minute in his Filofax, a planner holding his credit cards, cash and the keys to his Malibu home. When he loses it, the planner ends up with Jimmy Dworski, a good-natured convict who has slipped out of prison shortly before his sentence ends. Jimmy takes on Spencer's identity and enjoys the comforts that come with it, while Spencer, unable to prove who he is without his belongings, watches his marriage and career slide into chaos as he tries to track the planner down. The two men eventually collide.
The film was directed by Arthur Hiller as the fifteenth of the seventeen features he made, coming between See No Evil, Hear No Evil and The Babe. Jim Belushi plays Jimmy and Charles Grodin plays Spencer, with Anne DeSalvo, Loryn Locklin, Stephen Elliott and Héctor Elizondo among the credited cast of twenty-four. The screenplay is by J.J. Abrams and Jill Mazursky, and Geoffrey Taylor produced.
Released in August 1990, the comedy runs 108 minutes and had a budget of about 14 million dollars, against a worldwide gross of roughly 20 million. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 10,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.3 from about 190 votes. A critics' rating of 3.1 from 15 reviews is well below the audience scores.
