The bulls were filmed genuinely covered in blood. Animal rights activists from Madrid attempted to sue director Pedro Almodóvar for animal cruelty. Almodóvar responded by stating that he had permission from the bull owners to kill them, and accused the activists of chasing cheap publicity.
The character named Benigno is based on a friend of Pedro Almodóvar named Roberto Benigni.
When Marco asks Lydia her name and hears the answer, he says: "It seems you were destined to [bear this name]." The fact is that bullfighting is often called "the art of Lydia."
The director recalls that the idea for the film came to him at a Pina Bausch concert. The autograph that Benigno shows the motionless Alicia was given by Pina to Almodóvar himself several years before filming.
