Three high school students find themselves responsible for stopping the Sanderson sisters, three witches from the seventeenth century who have been brought back to life in Salem when the Black Flame Candle is lit again after twenty-nine years. With revenge on their minds, the witches set out to cause fresh trouble in the town, and the students must put an end to it before dawn on Halloween.

Anne Fletcher directed the film, the seventh feature in her directing career after Step Up, 27 Dresses, The Proposal, The Guilt Trip, Hot Pursuit and Dumplin'. Jen D'Angelo wrote the screenplay, Lynn Harris produced, and Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprise their roles as Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson. Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo and Lilia Buckingham play the three students. The production, from Walt Disney Pictures with David Kirschner Productions and Weimaraner Republic Pictures, had a budget of 40 million USD and runs 104 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds 6 out of 10 from around 59,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller base of about 1,870 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 156 reviews places it slightly below the IMDb audience figure and clearly below the TMDB score.
