The Mauritanian tells the story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a man from Mauritania who was taken into American custody and held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility for years without being charged or put on trial. After losing hope, he is approached by defense attorney Nancy Hollander and her associate Teri Duncan, who take on his case despite having doubts of their own. Their efforts put them at odds with the military system, including prosecutor Stuart Couch, and the film follows the legal fight to uncover what lies behind his detention. It is based on Slahi's memoir, Guantanamo Diary.
Kevin Macdonald directed the film, the ninth of thirteen features in his filmography, following Whitney and preceding High & Low – John Galliano. The screenplay is by Michael Bronner, Sohrab Noshirvani and Rory Haines. Tahar Rahim plays Slahi, with Jodie Foster as Hollander, Benedict Cumberbatch as Couch, Shailene Woodley as Duncan, Zachary Levi and Langley Kirkwood in supporting roles. The production was handled by STX Films, BBC Film, 30WEST and Topic Studios, and it runs 129 minutes.
Released in February 2021, the film took in about 8 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.4 out of 10 from over 1,300 votes, while the critics' score stands at 6.5 out of 10 from 218 reviews, a narrower margin between the two than is typical.
