The Unforgivable

The Unforgivable follows Ruth Slater, a woman who leaves prison after serving time for a violent crime and returns to a community that will not let her move on. The places that once felt like home have turned hostile, and she faces suspicion, threats and rejection from those who knew her. Her one aim is to find her younger sister, whom she was forced to leave behind, and to rebuild some kind of life around that hope.

Nora Fingscheidt directed the film, her second feature after System Crasher, working from a screenplay by Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz and Courtenay Miles. Sandra Bullock plays Ruth and also produced alongside Graham King and Veronica Ferres. The cast includes Viola Davis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Richard Thomas and Linda Emond, among 39 credited performers.

Released in 2021, the crime drama runs 112 minutes and was made across Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from about 128,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 out of 10 from roughly 2,100 votes, indicating a broadly favourable response from viewers. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 91 reviews is noticeably lower, suggesting reviewers were considerably less enthusiastic than audiences.
