James Bond, the British secret agent known as 007, is sent to Jamaica to look into the killing of a fellow operative. What begins as a murder investigation leads him to Crab Key, a private island controlled by the reclusive Dr. No, a scientist who is interfering with American rocket launches at Cape Canaveral. Bond is captured along with Honey Ryder, a young woman he meets on the island, and learns that Dr. No is working to divert the missiles from a hidden base. He has to find a way to stop the plan and escape.
The film is the first screen adaptation of Ian Fleming's Bond novels and the first entry in the long-running series. It was directed by Terence Young, whose previous feature was Serious Charge in 1959, and written by Richard Maibaum, Johanna Harwood and Berkely Mather. Sean Connery plays Bond, with Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder, Joseph Wiseman as the title villain, Jack Lord as Felix Leiter, Anthony Dawson as Professor Dent and Zena Marshall as Miss Taro. Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman produced for Eon Productions, United Artists and Danjaq.
Made for about one million dollars, the film took roughly 59 million dollars worldwide, a return that established the series commercially. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 194,000 votes, on TMDB 7 out of 10 from about 4,000 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.9 out of 10 from 63 reviews, higher than the audience scores.
