Short description
Commercial pilot Brodie Torrance is flying passengers on New Year's Eve when a storm forces him to attempt a risky landing. The plane comes down on an island torn apart by war, and the survivors soon find that hostile militias want to seize the aircraft and take the passengers hostage. Cut off from outside help, Brodie must rely on his own judgment to keep the group safe until rescue can reach them. Among those aboard is Louis Gaspare, a man being transported under FBI escort.
Gerard Butler plays Brodie and also produced the film through G-BASE, alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian. Mike Colter plays Gaspare, with Tony Goldwyn, Yoson An, Evan Dane Taylor and Paul Ben-Victor in supporting roles. Jean-François Richet directed from a screenplay by J.P. Davis and Charles Cumming, following his earlier films Assault on Precinct 13, the two-part Mesrine, One Wild Moment, Blood Father and The Emperor of Paris.
Made for a budget of 25 million dollars, the film went on to take about 75 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from more than 2,700 votes, while the critics' score stands at 6.1 from 170 reviews, showing audiences responding somewhat more warmly than critics did.
What's left behind the scenes
- Former Navy SEALs served as extras and consultants because director Jean-François Richet wanted the action scenes to look as realistic as possible. He hired Remy Adeleke and Pete Scobell (both former SEALs with experience in cinema) to train the actors and coordinate the stunts. They also appeared on screen in supporting roles and as extras.
- Philippine lawmakers stated that the film insulted their country and tarnished its reputation, leading the local distributor to decide not to release the film in Philippine cinemas. According to one senator, the film portrayed the Philippines in a negative light just as the country was trying to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. This senator also stated that since the producers went to the trouble of declaring the film based on fictional events, they should not have claimed it took place in the Philippines or shown island residents consorting with terrorists.
- Puerto Rico was chosen as the primary filming location due to its diverse landscapes, tax incentives, and the availability of required personnel and equipment.
