Life Stinks

Goddard Bolt is a wealthy, arrogant real estate developer who wants to build on a run-down section of Los Angeles, but he only owns half the land he needs. The other half belongs to his rival, Vance Crasswell, who proposes a wager: if Bolt can survive thirty days in the neighborhood with no money and no identity, the land is his; if not, Crasswell takes the whole area. Confident in his own cleverness, Bolt accepts, only to find that life on the streets is nothing like he imagined. He encounters hardship and lawlessness, and along the way he meets Molly, a former Broadway dancer who has also fallen on hard times.

Mel Brooks directed, produced and co-wrote the film with Steve Haberman and Rudy De Luca, and he stars as Bolt. It followed Spaceballs in his filmography and came before Robin Hood: Men in Tights. The cast includes Lesley Ann Warren as Molly, Jeffrey Tambor as Crasswell, Stuart Pankin, Michael Ensign and Howard Morris.

Released in June 1991, the film cost about 13 million dollars and took in roughly 4 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4.1/10 from 19 reviews, while on TMDB it has 5.6/10 from 227 votes, so audiences rated it somewhat more kindly than critics did.
