Poupelle of Chimney Town

Poupelle of Chimney Town is set in a city encircled by a towering wall, where countless chimneys fill the air with black smoke and the sky has not been seen for generations. Lubicchi is a young chimney sweep who holds on to his late father's stories of stars beyond the haze, even though the other residents have long since stopped believing in them. On Halloween night he meets Poupelle, a figure assembled from discarded junk, and the two set out together to find out what lies above the smoke.

The 2020 Japanese animated film was directed by Yusuke Hirota, with a screenplay by Akihiro Nishino. It is Hirota's first feature, followed by Chimney Town: Frozen in Time in 2026. The voice cast includes Mana Ashida as Lubicchi, Masataka Kubota as Poupelle, Shinosuke Tatekawa as Bruno, Eiko Koike as Lola, Shingo Fujimori as Scopp and Toru Nomaguchi as Reta XV. It was produced by STUDIO4℃ and Yoshimoto Kogyo.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 from 854 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.6 from 75 votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 from 18 reviews places it noticeably above those audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded more warmly than general viewers did.
