I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

Deborah Blake is a sixteen-year-old girl committed to a psychiatric hospital, where she retreats into an elaborate fantasy world she has built around herself since childhood. As her attachment to this imagined realm deepens, it becomes harder for her to tell it apart from the life around her, and the line between the two grows increasingly difficult to hold. Her doctor works to draw her back toward reality while Deborah struggles to give up the refuge she has created.

The 1977 American drama was directed by Anthony Page, with a screenplay by Gavin Lambert and Lewis John Carlino. Kathleen Quinlan plays Deborah, and Bibi Andersson appears as Dr. Fried, alongside Ben Piazza, Lorraine Gary and Martine Bartlett among a credited cast of thirty-eight. The film runs 96 minutes and was produced by New World Pictures on a budget of about 3 million dollars.
