Short description

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery follows detective Benoit Blanc to Greece, where a tech billionaire has gathered a group of friends on his private island. Miles Bron, the wealthy head of a technology company, invites these guests for what is meant to be a getaway, but it becomes clear that tensions run beneath the surface of the gathering. When someone turns up dead, Blanc takes on the case and works through the layers of a mystery involving Bron and the people closest to him.

Rian Johnson wrote and directed the film, which he also produced with Ram Bergman. It is the second entry in the Knives Out series, arriving after the 2019 film of that name and before Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and it sits between Knives Out and Star Wars: The Last Jedi in Johnson's filmography. Daniel Craig returns as Benoit Blanc, joined by Edward Norton as Miles Bron, Janelle Monáe as Andi Brand, Kathryn Hahn as Claire Debella, Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel Toussaint and Kate Hudson as Birdie Jay. The production had a budget of 40 million dollars and a worldwide box office of 13 million dollars.

On IMDb the film holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 519,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7 out of 10 from just over 7,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 438 reviews places critical assessment above both audience scores. The credited cast numbers 37, with 362 credited crew members.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Kaley Cuoco was initially considered for the role played by Kate Hudson.
  • In Miles Bron's living room hangs a painting by Mark Rothko (1903-1970) entitled “No. 207,” but it is hung upside down to demonstrate this character’s true attitude towards art and his overall level of intellectual development. In reality, the painting is titled “No. 207 (Red on Dark Blue over Dark Gray),” and the title itself contains a hint as to how the painting should be hung. According to the filmmakers' intent, Bron doesn’t even understand this.
  • When working on Benoit Blanc's swimsuit, as portrayed by Daniel Craig, costume designer Jenny Egen used working notes on a swimsuit once designed for Frank Sinatra (1915-1998).

  • Ethan Hawke's cameo was not originally planned, but it happened that he was in Budapest filming the mini-series 'Moon Knight' at the time of the film's shooting, so he flew to Greece for a day to film his scene.
  • Edward Norton's appearance in the flashback, when Andy introduces him to the others, is based on the look of Tom Cruise's character in the drama 'Magnolia'.
  • In Miles Bron's living room, Mark Rothko's painting “No. 207” is hung upside down to demonstrate the character’s broad outlook. The full title – “No. 207 (Red on Dark Blue over Dark Gray)” – is a hint as to how the painting should be hung.
  • At the 6-minute mark, when Duke (played by Dave Bautista) is talking to his mother (played by Jackie Hoffman), a poster for the film “Scarface” can be seen on the left wall.
