Beastie Boys Story is a documentary in which Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz tell the story of their band and of a friendship spanning four decades. Speaking directly to a live audience, the two trace how three friends from New York formed a group, and what followed over the years as their lives and music changed. Spike Jonze, a long-time collaborator of the band, directed the film and wrote it with Horovitz and Diamond, and he also produced it with Jason Baum and Amanda Adelson. Adam Yauch appears through archive footage, while Ben Stiller, Steve Buscemi and David Cross also feature among the credited cast.
The film was released in April 2020 and runs for two hours. It sits between Her and Shape of Dreams in Spike Jonze's work as a director, following three earlier features. Its 38 credited cast members and 46 credited crew reflect a production with substantial behind-the-scenes resources, made with companies in the United Kingdom and the United States.
A film critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10, based on 86 reviews, is close to the 7.7 from roughly 8,800 votes on IMDb and to the 7.5 from around 200 votes on TMDB, suggesting that viewers and critics responded to the film in similar terms.
