A Whisker Away

Miyo Sasaki, a spirited schoolgirl nicknamed Muge, is hopelessly smitten with her classmate Kento Hinode, who pays her little mind. When she comes across a strange mask that lets her take the form of a cat, she uses it to get close to him as a stray he takes in. What begins as a way to win his attention gradually costs her more than she expected, as the boundary between her human and feline selves begins to erode.

The film is a Japanese animated feature directed by Junichi Sato and Tomotaka Shibayama, with a screenplay by Mari Okada. It sits between Sato's Aria the Avvenire and Looking for Magical Doremi, and it is the first of the two features Shibayama has directed. The voice cast includes Mirai Shida as Miyo and her cat form, Natsuki Hanae as Kento, and Koichi Yamadera as the Mask Seller. It was produced by Studio Colorido alongside TOHO, Fuji Television Network and KDDI.

Released in June 2020, the film runs 104 minutes. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from around 18,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.9 from roughly 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 from 14 reviews places it above the IMDb audience score but below the TMDB figure.
