Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical follows a gifted young girl whose intelligence and imagination set her apart from the family that largely ignores her. Sent to Crunchem Hall, a school run by the tyrannical headmistress Agatha Trunchbull, Matilda finds a friend in her kind teacher Miss Honey and discovers she possesses unusual abilities. She uses them to stand up for herself and the people around her, determined to take charge of her own future.

The film is a British adaptation of the stage musical by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin, directed by Matthew Warchus. It was his third feature, arriving after Simpatico and Pride, and his background in theatre shaped the material, which reunites him with Kelly as screenwriter. Alisha Weir plays Matilda, with Emma Thompson as Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as her parents, and Sindhu Vee as Mrs. Phelps. Producers include Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Jonathan Finn, working with Working Title Films and The Roald Dahl Story Company.

Released in late 2022, the film runs just under two hours. Made for about 25 million dollars, it took roughly 37 million worldwide, a modest theatrical result that followed its streaming debut. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 33,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from a much smaller group. A critics' rating of 7.7 from 99 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
