A fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, was organized five weeks after a devastating hurricane. A charitable fund was established, and an anonymous donor pledged a $5,000 prize to the team that hired a local boat to go out for the tournament. There was no entry fee, which allowed the orphanage team to participate in the competition.
According to the orphanage's website, the orphanage itself did not financially benefit from the film, but hoped to attract public attention to such institutions, which largely operate without any government funding, through its participation in the fishing tournament.
After Omar, played by Jimmy Gonzalez, caught the largest fish in the competition – a blue marlin weighing over 174 kg – the team won the prize for the best team catch, the main prize of the competition, and the prize for the best catch of the second day of the competition, and donated almost the entire amount to the orphanage where the team members grew up.
