Short description

Blue Miracle follows the residents and guardian of a struggling orphanage in Mexico whose finances and buildings are left in ruins after a hurricane strikes the coast. Facing the prospect of losing the home, the children join forces with their caretaker to enter a fishing tournament with a large cash prize, teaming up with a boat captain whose best days are behind him. The film blends adventure, drama and family elements as the group works toward a shared goal against difficult odds.

Julio Quintana directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Dowling, and the film was produced by Darren Moorman and Trey Reynolds. It was Quintana's first feature, followed later by The Long Game and Angel and the Badman. Jimmy Gonzales plays Omar, with Dennis Quaid as Wade, Anthony Gonzalez as Geco, Bruce McGill as Wayne Bisbee, Raymond Cruz as Hector and Dana Wheeler-Nicholson as Tricia Bisbee. The production involved companies from both Mexico and the United States, and it runs 95 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a 6.6 rating from around 8,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.3 from roughly 310 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from 25 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores. The vote counts point to a modest but steady viewership rather than a large mainstream following.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, was organized five weeks after a devastating hurricane. A charitable fund was established, and an anonymous donor pledged a $5,000 prize to the team that hired a local boat to go out for the tournament. There was no entry fee, which allowed the orphanage team to participate in the competition.
  • According to the orphanage's website, the orphanage itself did not financially benefit from the film, but hoped to attract public attention to such institutions, which largely operate without any government funding, through its participation in the fishing tournament.
  • After Omar, played by Jimmy Gonzalez, caught the largest fish in the competition – a blue marlin weighing over 174 kg – the team won the prize for the best team catch, the main prize of the competition, and the prize for the best catch of the second day of the competition, and donated almost the entire amount to the orphanage where the team members grew up.
