What's left behind the scenes
- To help the actors better prepare for the film and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period, director Ang Lee gave them extensive collections of clippings from 1970s magazines.
- Although the script places the events of the film in November, filming actually began in late spring. This is easily noticeable in the abundance of green foliage in some outdoor scenes.
- The author of the novel on which the film is based, Rick Moody, was so pleased with the result that he shed a tear during the end credits.
- Katie Holmes' acting debut.
- When Christina Ricci's character is asked to say grace, she launches into a tirade about how Thanksgiving is actually a depiction and celebration of cruelty. The actress delivers a similar speech while making a Thanksgiving toast in 'The Addams Family' (1992).
- The book Jane is reading while sitting on an air mattress is Philip Roth's novel "She Was Good," first published in 1967.
