To help the actors better prepare for the film and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period, director Ang Lee gave them extensive collections of clippings from 1970s magazines.
Although the script places the events of the film in November, filming actually began in late spring. This is easily noticeable in the abundance of green foliage in some outdoor scenes.
