Short description
Set in New Canaan, Connecticut, over the Thanksgiving weekend of 1973, The Ice Storm follows the Hood family as the marriage of Ben and Elena comes apart. Ben is involved with Janey Carver, a neighbour, while Elena has grown weary of his lies. Their teenage daughter Wendy experiments sexually with the Carver boys, and their son Paul travels into the city hoping for an encounter with a classmate. The adults move in a climate of shifting attitudes, while a severe ice storm closes in and the weekend builds toward a tragedy.
Ang Lee directed the film, the fifth of the fourteen features he has made in chronological order, following Sense and Sensibility and preceding Ride with the Devil. James Schamus wrote the screenplay, and Lee, Schamus and Ted Hope produced. Kevin Kline and Joan Allen play Ben and Elena, with Sigourney Weaver as Janey Carver, Jamey Sheridan as Jim Carver, Christina Ricci as Wendy and Tobey Maguire as Paul. The film runs 113 minutes.
Made for a budget of 18 million dollars, it took roughly 16 million dollars worldwide, so its theatrical run fell short of its cost. Audiences are generally positive: it holds a 7.3 rating on IMDb from 63,000 votes and 6.9 on TMDB from 768 votes. Critics were more enthusiastic still, with a score of 8.2 from 71 reviews.

- The book Jane is reading while sitting on an air mattress is Philip Roth's novel "She Was Good," first published in 1967.
- The author of the novel on which the film is based, Rick Moody, was so pleased with the result that he shed a tear during the end credits.
- To help the actors better prepare for the film and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period, director Ang Lee gave them extensive collections of clippings from 1970s magazines.
- Katie Holmes' acting debut.
- Although the script places the events of the film in November, filming actually began in late spring. This is easily noticeable in the abundance of green foliage in some outdoor scenes.
- When Christina Ricci's character is asked to say grace, she launches into a tirade about how Thanksgiving is actually a depiction and celebration of cruelty. The actress delivers a similar speech while making a Thanksgiving toast in 'The Addams Family' (1992).
