Eastern Condors is a Hong Kong war action film about a group of Chinese prisoners held in the United States who are offered their freedom in exchange for a dangerous mission. They are sent into Vietnam to find and destroy a hidden stockpile of missiles and other weapons that American forces left behind when they withdrew. After limited training, the men are dropped into hostile jungle territory, where Vietnamese forces and a ruthless general stand between them and the depot.
Sammo Hung directed the film, the eleventh of the sixteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Millionaires' Express in 1986 and preceding Dragons Forever in 1988. Barry Wong wrote the screenplay, and Corey Yuen, Leonard Ho and Wu Ma produced. Hung also stars as Tung Ming-Sun, alongside Yuen Biao, Joyce Godenzi, Yuen Wah, Lam Ching-Ying and Yasuaki Kurata; forty-five performers are credited.
Released in Hong Kong in July 1987 and running 97 minutes, the film holds a 7.1 rating on IMDb from around 3,500 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from roughly 120 votes. Those figures indicate a solid, enduring reputation among viewers rather than broad mainstream attention. It sits within the action, adventure and war genres, combining a suicide-mission premise with martial-arts action.
