The Honorary Consul

The Honorary Consul is a 1983 British drama directed by John Mackenzie. It takes place in a small, politically unstable Latin American country, where Dr. Eduardo Plarr, a physician of mixed English and Latin American background, has returned after years abroad. He becomes involved with Clara, the wife of Charley Fortnum, the British honorary consul, a remorseful alcoholic. Plarr is also drawn into a revolutionary group's scheme to abduct a foreign diplomat, a plan that goes wrong and puts Fortnum in danger. The film is based on Graham Greene's novel of the same name.

Mackenzie directed the film between The Long Good Friday and The Fourth Protocol, the third of the seven features listed in his filmography. Christopher Hampton wrote the screenplay, and Norma Heyman produced. Michael Caine plays Fortnum, Richard Gere plays Plarr, and Elpidia Carrillo plays Clara, with Bob Hoskins, Joaquim de Almeida and A Martinez in supporting roles.
