Albert Serra directed this 2022 drama, set on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. De Roller, the French Republic's High Commissioner and a government official, is a calculating man with polished manners who moves between official receptions and the island's shadier establishments. He keeps a constant read on a local population whose anger could flare up at any moment, and a persistent rumour adds to the tension: a submarine has reportedly been sighted, and its ghostly presence may signal the resumption of French nuclear testing. The film runs 166 minutes.
Benoît Magimel plays De Roller, heading a credited cast of 21 that includes Pahoa Mahagafanau, Marc Susini, Matahi Pambrun, Sergi López and Montse Triola. Serra wrote the screenplay with Baptiste Pinteaux, and produced alongside Pierre-Olivier Bardet and Joaquim Sapinho. The production was a European co-production involving Germany, Spain, Portugal, France and French Polynesia. It followed Serra's Liberté (2019) and My Influences (2020), and preceded Afternoons of Solitude (2025) and Sixteen Moments of My Life (2026).
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from around 4,100 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from 164 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 69 reviews places it noticeably above those audience scores, indicating stronger approval among reviewers than among general viewers.
