Manila in the Claws of Light

Julio, a young fisherman from the provinces, travels to Manila to find his love, Ligaya. As he searches for her in the city, he works as a construction laborer and faces dangerous working conditions and systemic injustice. His journey leads him into a world of male prostitution and eventually reveals that Ligaya is working in a brothel. Through these experiences, Julio transforms from a naive young man into a bitter person filled with anger toward the city.

Directed by Lino Brocka, this 1975 Philippine drama and mystery was the first in a series of films by the director that included Insiang, Bona, and Macho Dancer. The screenplay was written by Clodualdo del Mundo Jr. and produced by Severino Manotok Jr. and Mike de Leon.
