Set in London in 1889, this animated short follows the monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing as he is sent to track down a demonic figure responsible for a series of killings. The victims are young women, attacked at night on the city's streets. Van Helsing's investigation leads him to discover that the creature is the alternate personality of a respected doctor, whose plans reach well beyond the murders themselves and put the British Empire at risk.
Directed by Sharon Bridgeman from a screenplay by Garfield Reeves-Stevens and Judith Reeves-Stevens, the film runs 33 minutes and was produced by John Kafka for Universal. It serves as a companion piece to the 2004 live-action Van Helsing, with Hugh Jackman voicing the hunter and David Wenham voicing Carl, both reprising their roles from that feature in animated form. Robbie Coltrane voices Mr. Hyde, Dwight Schultz voices Dr. Jekyll, and Grey DeLisle and John DiMaggio round out the cast.
Released in May 2004, the short drew modest audience scores: on IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 3,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 177 votes. The two figures are close, suggesting a similar reception among viewers on both platforms.
