Sharper is a crime thriller set in New York City, moving between luxury apartments and less glamorous corners of the city. At its centre are a wealthy family and a group of people whose motivations are not what they appear to be. A con artist who targets wealthy Manhattan men crosses paths with a man who makes his living from elaborate schemes, and their ambitions, greed and deceptions gradually pull the family apart. The film follows a small circle of characters whose secrets and lies drive the conflict, though the story keeps shifting who can be trusted.
Benjamin Caron directs from a screenplay by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka. The film sits between the series Andor and Night Always Comes in Caron's chronological filmography. Julianne Moore, who also produced, plays Madeline Phillips, with Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Briana Middleton, John Lithgow and Darren Goldstein among the cast. The production involved A24, Picturestart, fortysixty and G&T Productions.
Released in February 2023 and running 115 minutes, the film drew a mix of responses. Its critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 143 reviews is close to the audience scores on IMDb, where it holds 6.7 from around 38,000 votes, and on TMDB, where it sits at 6.9 from 724 votes. Those figures point to a broadly favourable but not enthusiastic reception across critics and viewers alike.
