Short description
Luther: The Fallen Sun follows John Luther, a brilliant London detective who has been imprisoned after a major case. A sadistic serial killer is terrorizing the city, and the killer taunts Luther from the outside, treating him as a captive audience. Unable to let the case go, Luther escapes from prison to pursue the murderer himself, working outside the rules of normal police investigation while his former superiors watch closely. The film is a feature-length continuation of the television series Luther, with Idris Elba returning to the role he played across the show's run.
Jamie Payne directs, following his earlier television film Doctor Who: The Time of the Doctor in 2013, and Neil Cross, who created the series, wrote the screenplay. Elba also produced alongside Jenno Topping and Peter Chernin. Cynthia Erivo plays Odette Raine, Andy Serkis plays the killer David Robey, and Dermot Crowley returns as Martin Schenk. The large credited cast and crew reflect the scale of the production, which was mounted by Chernin Entertainment, BBC Film and BBC Studios. Running 129 minutes, the film drew an IMDb rating of 6.4 from around 72,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.6 from over a thousand votes, with a critics' rating of 5.9 from roughly 100 reviews. Audience scores sit close to the critical average, indicating a moderately received thriller rather than a broadly acclaimed one.
What's left behind the scenes
- The fight scene between the characters of Idris Elba and Andy Serkis was filmed at the abandoned Aldwych station of the London Underground. It opened in 1907 and closed in 1994. During World War II, the station was used to shelter some exhibits from the National Gallery and the British Museum.
- The underwater scenes were filmed at the “Lite Studios” in Brussels, Belgium, which houses the largest and deepest underwater filming tank in Europe.
- The prison where the main character, played by Idris Elba, finds himself at the beginning of the film is located in Dorchester, England. It was closed in 2014, and extensive renovations were required before filming could begin.
