England, 1763. A young woman convicted of a crime escapes execution by agreeing to serve fourteen years as a bond slave in the Virginia colony. Separated from her fiancé and sold into servitude in North America, Abby crosses paths with Captain Christopher Holden, and their lives become entangled with the escalating conflict in the frontier, where settlers grow fearful of war drums sounding through the Ohio valley and an uprising among the Native tribes, with the Seneca chief Guyasuta among those involved.

Cecil B. DeMille directed and produced this historical adventure, working from a screenplay by Charles Bennett, Fredric M. Frank and Jesse Lasky Jr. Gary Cooper stars as Holden, with Paulette Goddard as Abby, Howard Da Silva, Boris Karloff, Cecil Kellaway and Ward Bond among the cast.
