Short description

England, 1763. After being convicted of a crime, the young and beautiful Abigail Hale agrees, to escape the gallows, to serve fourteen years as a slave in the colony of Virginia, whose inhabitants begin to hear and fear the sinister song of the threatening drums of war that resound in the wild Ohio valley.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Gary Cooper (1901-1961) was ill during filming. The actor was 46 at the time, and heavy makeup was required for him to play the young captain.
  • Producer Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959) flew into a rage when Paulette Goddard refused to act in a complex scene where incendiary shells were thrown at her character. DeMille was forced to hire a female stunt double, who suffered a burn. It is claimed that DeMille got his chance to pay Goddard back five years later while filming 'The Greatest Show on Earth' (1952); Goddard lobbied for a key role in the movie, but instead of her, he cast Gloria Grahame (1923-1981).
  • All scenes featuring Boris Karloff (1887-1969) were filmed with a tea break at 4 p.m. (a requirement he always included in his filming contracts). These tea times became so popular that even Gary Cooper and Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) attended them, and Paulette Goddard (1910-1990) also made it a habit to include a mandatory tea break requirement in her filming contracts.
  • Producer Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959) flew into a rage when Paulette Goddard refused to perform in a difficult scene where her character was pelted with flaming projectiles. DeMille was forced to hire a stuntwoman, who subsequently suffered burns. It is claimed that DeMille had the opportunity to get even with Goddard five years later, when he was filming 'The Greatest Show on Earth' (1952), and Goddard sought the key role, but he cast Gloria Grahame (1923-1981) instead.
  • The film features 25 credited actors and 4,325 extras.
