Craig is a boy in a small Maine town who takes a job reading aloud to Mr. Harrigan, a wealthy recluse. The arrangement grows into an unlikely friendship, sustained by books and, later, by a smartphone Craig gives the old man. After Mr. Harrigan dies, Craig slips the phone into his pocket before the burial, and messages begin arriving from the dead man.
The film is based on a short story by Stephen King. John Lee Hancock wrote the screenplay and directed; it is the eighth film he directed, following The Little Things. Donald Sutherland plays Mr. Harrigan and Jaeden Martell plays Craig, with Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett and Cyrus Arnold among the supporting cast. Ryan Murphy, Jason Blum and Carla Hacken produced.
It runs 105 minutes and mixes drama with horror, mystery and thriller elements. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from 44,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from 996 votes, placing viewer response a little above the critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 64 reviews.
