Leave the World Behind
Short description
A family rents a luxurious house for a weekend away, only for their devices to fail in what turns out to be a cyberattack. Two strangers then arrive at the door, a man and his daughter who claim the house belongs to them, and the two households are forced to share the same space as the disruption around them grows more serious. Leave the World Behind is a drama with horror, mystery, science fiction and thriller elements, and it unfolds over 140 minutes.
Sam Esmail directed and wrote the screenplay, and he produced alongside Julia Roberts, Lisa Roberts Gillan and others. It is his second feature as director, following Comet (2014) and preceding Panic Carefully (2027). Roberts and Ethan Hawke play Amanda and Clay Sandford, with Mahershala Ali and Myha'la as G.H. and Ruth Scott. Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans appear as the Sandford children, Rose and Archie.
The film was released in November 2023. It holds a rating of 6.4 on IMDb from around 240,000 votes and a 6.4 on TMDB from roughly 3,400 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.7 from 160 reviews, slightly above the audience scores on both platforms.
