Nightbitch
Short description
Nightbitch follows a former artist who has paused her career to stay home and raise her young son in the suburbs. Her husband is often away for work, and the unvarying daily routine leaves her frustrated, isolated and cut off from the creative life she once had. Before long she notices strange changes in herself and becomes convinced that something animal is taking hold of her, a surreal turn that reshapes how she sees motherhood and her own identity.
Marielle Heller directed and wrote the film, her fourth feature after The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Amy Adams plays the mother, with Scoot McNairy as her husband, twins Arleigh and Emmett Snowden as their son, and Jessica Harper and Zoe Chao in supporting roles. Heller also produced alongside Christina Oh and Sue Naegle. The production, made for a reported budget of 20 million US dollars, drew a limited response from audiences after its December 2024 release: it holds a 5.5 rating on IMDb from roughly 24,000 votes and a 5.7 on TMDB from about 404 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 across 220 reviews places professional opinion slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Work on the film was originally scheduled to begin in mid-2023, but due to the Writers Guild of America strike (May 2 – September 27, 2023), the start of work was delayed by a year.
- Initially, it was planned that the film would be distributed directly on Hulu (a subscription streaming service owned by The Walt Disney Company), but after test screenings, it was decided to release the film in cinemas.
- The film's director and screenwriter, Marielle Heller, insisted that the dog into which the main character transforms have blue eyes and ginger fur, like the eyes and hair of Amy Adams, who played the role, and such coloring is rare for Siberian huskies. The trainers the filmmakers worked with didn't have any such dogs in mind, so they had to search through shelters, where they eventually found the right one. The dog was trained for 6 weeks – less than usual. After filming wrapped, it was taken in by trainer Adriana Endy Echeverria.
