Short description

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre follows Orson Fortune, a British intelligence operative pulled away from a quiet holiday when a deadly new weapons technology is stolen and put up for sale. The sale threatens to upset the global balance of power, so Fortune is sent to track down the deal and stop it. Working with a small team of operatives from different agencies, he targets Greg Simmonds, a billionaire arms broker with a taste for celebrity company. To get close to him, the team brings in Danny Francesco, one of Hollywood's biggest film stars, and uses him as cover while travelling the world under false identities. Fortune would rather work alone, and the arrangement forces him into an approach built on performance rather than tradecraft.

The film is directed by Guy Ritchie, who also wrote the screenplay with Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson, and produced it alongside Jason Statham and Steve Chasman. It is the fourteenth of the nineteen films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Guy Ritchie's The Covenant and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Statham plays Fortune, with Aubrey Plaza as Sarah Fidel, Cary Elwes as Nathan, Hugh Grant as Simmonds, Josh Hartnett as Francesco and Bugzy Malone as JJ. Made for about 50 million dollars, it returned roughly 49 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from 76,855 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 2,063 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 5.6 out of 10 from 151 reviews, leaving audiences slightly more favourable than reviewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director and screenwriter Guy Ritchie encouraged improvisation from the actors in the film. His directorial style was particularly well-liked by Aubrey Plaza, who played Sarah.
  • When performing car stunts (known as precision driving), Josh Hartnett, who played Danny Francesco, did almost all of his own work.
  • In one scene, Hugh Grant (who played Greg Simmonds) grills meat on a barbecue table that is nearly an exact replica of the one featured in Guy Ritchie's action-comedy "The Gentlemen" (2019). Ritchie is generally fond of barbecues and outdoor cooking.
  • On Simmonds' yacht, the characters played by Aubrey Plaza and Max Bisley (Sarah and Ben Harris, respectively) talk about a painting by someone named Red. Red is the pseudonym of artist Rocco Ritchie, the son of the film's director Guy Ritchie and singer Madonna.
