Death Carries a Cane

Kitty, a photographer living in Rome, is looking through a public telescope when she sees a woman being murdered in a nearby apartment by someone dressed entirely in black. She and her fiancé Alberto report what she saw to the police, but the investigation proves difficult, and other witnesses to the crime are killed soon afterward. The killer, who seems to be someone Kitty knows, may now be coming after her.

Maurizio Pradeaux directed this Italian-Spanish horror, mystery and thriller, released in January 1973 and running 91 minutes. The screenplay is credited to Arpad De Riso, Alfonso Balcázar and George Martin, and production came from SEFI and Balcázar. Robert Hoffmann plays Alberto Morosini, with Nieves Navarro as Kitty, George Martin as Inspector Merughi and Anuska Borova as Lidia and Silvia Arrighi. Simón Andreu and Anna Liberati also appear among the 23 credited cast members.

The film drew modest audience scores: 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,000 votes, and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller group of voters. Those figures point to a title with a small but established following rather than a widely praised one. It belongs to the cycle of early-1970s Italian thrillers built around a masked or gloved killer.
