The film's plot is based on the book by Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith "The Enforcer: A True Story of a Hockey Goon's Incredible Journey Through the Minor Leagues." The end credits of the film play against footage showing Smith in hockey games.
In preparing for the role of Doug Glatt, actor Sean William Scott had to gain muscle mass and train in skating and applying body checks on the ice.
The actor Ricky Mabey, who played John Stevenson, trained under the guidance of a professional hockey player. He actually filmed an episode in which a body check was used against his character and even sustained an injury.
The episode where Doug scores a goal with his rear end happened in real life. It happened in 2000 to Doug Mann, a player for the Columbus Cottonmouths. The goal scored in this manner allowed Mann's team to advance to the finals.
