Kaali Khuhi

Ten-year-old Shivangi travels with her family to a Punjab village to visit her ailing grandmother. What she finds there is a community haunted by a long history of female infanticide, and a restless spirit that has turned that history into a curse. With the village's fate resting on her, Shivangi is the one who must confront what the past has left behind. Kaali Khuhi is a Hindi-language drama with horror and thriller elements, released in October 2020 and running ninety minutes.

The film was directed by Terrie Samundra, who wrote the screenplay with Rupinder Inderjit and David Walter Lech, and produced by Ramon Chibb under Manomay Motion Pictures. It was Samundra's first feature, followed chronologically by Extinction Story Origin Story in 2024. The cast is led by Riva Arora as Shivangi and Shabana Azmi as Satya Maasi, with Satyadeep Misra as Darshan, Sanjeeda Sheikh as Priya and Leela Samson as Dadi. The story draws on the folk figure of the kaali khuhi, a black well associated with the disposal of newborn girls.

Audience response was weak. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 3.7 from around 1,500 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 4.6 from a small number of votes. Both figures suggest a film that found little favour with viewers.
