Day Shift
Short description
Bud Jablonski is a vampire hunter working the San Fernando Valley, but his job does not pay well enough for the life he needs to support. When his ex-wife threatens to move their daughter away, Bud has one week to raise money for school fees and orthodontics, which pushes him back toward the union of hunters he left behind and into a run of jobs that carry real risk.
Jamie Foxx plays Bud, with Dave Franco as Seth, an office-bound union representative assigned to keep an eye on him. Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Meagan Good, Zion Broadnax and Snoop Dogg round out the main cast. The film was directed by J.J. Perry, a veteran stunt coordinator making his feature directing debut, and written by Shay Hatten and Tyler Tice, with Chad Stahelski among the producers.
Day Shift was released in August 2022 and runs 114 minutes, mixing action and horror with comedy. Its roughly 100 million dollar budget marks it as a large-scale production. On IMDb it holds a 6.1 rating from about 99,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller base of around 2,300. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 140 reviews places it just below the audience scores. Perry went on to direct The Killer's Game in 2024 and Afterburn in 2025.
What's left behind the scenes
- All the vampire-acrobats were played by artists from various circus troupes, such as Cirque du Soleil. This was done to show the audience vampires of different types and to provide work for performers who had lost regular income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Initially, it was planned that the Nazaryan brothers would be played by Scott Adkins and Romanian actor Liviu Kovalski, but Kovalski turned out to be busy, and Steve Howey was cast instead.
