Short description
Victor Pivert is a wealthy French factory owner with rigid views about who belongs in his country. While travelling to Paris for his daughter's wedding, he accidentally becomes entangled in a political conflict and is forced to flee with Slimane, an Arab rebel leader. To escape their pursuers, the two disguise themselves as rabbis, and Pivert is mistaken for Rabbi Jacob, a beloved figure returning to France after three decades in the United States. His wife and daughter, meanwhile, are caught up in their own confusion about what has happened to him.
The film is a comedy directed by Gérard Oury, who wrote the screenplay with Danièle Thompson and Josy Eisenberg. It came after Delusions of Grandeur in Oury's filmography and reunited him with Louis de Funès, who plays Pivert. Suzy Delair appears as Germaine Pivert, Marcel Dalio as the real Rabbi Jacob, and Claude Giraud as Slimane. The cast runs to 57 credited performers, and the production was made in France and Italy.

- The film premiered on October 18, 1973, during the height of the Yom Kippur War between Israel and Arab countries. On the same day, the press attaché’s wife hijacked a plane to prevent the film’s release, which she claimed was pro-Israel. She was eventually shot by a police sniper.
