Short description
Set in 1979, X follows a small group of young filmmakers who travel to rural Texas intending to shoot an adult film in a rented farmhouse. The elderly couple who own the isolated property are unaware of what their guests are really doing, and once night falls the hosts' interest in the visitors turns violent. The group is forced to fight for survival against people they had taken for harmless.
The film is written and directed by Ti West, the ninth of the thirteen features he has directed in chronological order, following In a Valley of Violence and preceding Pearl. Mia Goth plays Maxine, Jenna Ortega plays Lorraine, and the cast also includes Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, Martin Henderson and Owen Campbell. It was produced by Kevin Turen, Sam Levinson and West for A24 and Little Lamb Productions.
Made for about 1 million dollars, X grossed roughly 15 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audience responses are moderate but positive, with a rating of 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from a large vote count and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller one. A film critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 230 reviews places professional assessments noticeably higher than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The day after the premiere of the film 'X' at 'South by Southwest' (an event that includes a series of music, film, and media festivals and conferences held annually in mid-March in Austin, Texas), the film's director, Ti West, announced that during a two-week quarantine he had written the script for a prequel – 'Pearl' (2022). Filming of 'X' had already finished, all the sets were still in place, and he asked actress Mia Goth if she would like to stay in New Zealand for a little longer and shoot 'Pearl'. She agreed.
- Applying Mia Goth's makeup, including 30 separate prosthetics, took 6 hours, and she transformed into Pearl, who is approximately four times older than Maxxxine.
- The film's title references the 'X' rating of the American Film Association's rating system, which existed from 1968 to 1990, according to which this film was intended for viewers aged 16 and over. This rating was also assigned at the time to John Schlesinger's (1926-2003) 'Midnight Cowboy' (1969), Melvin Van Peebles' (1932-2021) 'Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song' (1971), Stanley Kubrick's (1928-1999) 'A Clockwork Orange' (1971), Ralph Bakshi's 'Fritz the Cat' (1972), and Bernardo Bertolucci's (1941-2018) 'Last Tango in Paris' (1972). In the 1970s, the 'X' rating began to be assigned primarily to pornographic films shown in theaters, and more and more theaters began to refuse to show films with an 'X' rating. In 1990, the American Film Association removed the 'X' rating from its classifier and replaced it with the 'NC-17' rating (persons 17 years of age and younger are not admitted to the film).
