Katzelmacher

Set in Munich, Katzelmacher follows a group of young people who spend their days drifting between the apartment building where they live, a café and each other's company, filling the time with routine and idle talk rather than purpose. Their settled boredom is disturbed when Jorgos, a Greek immigrant worker, moves into the building. The group's response to the newcomer turns hostile and jealous, and the outsider becomes the target of their resentment.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed and wrote the screenplay, with Peer Raben producing. Katzelmacher is the earliest of the films by Fassbinder listed here, made before Whity, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Chinese Roulette, Despair, The Marriage of Maria Braun, Lola, Lili Marleen, Querelle and Veronika Voss. Fassbinder also appears in the cast as Jorgos, alongside Hanna Schygulla as Marie, Hans Hirschmüller as Erich, Lilith Ungerer as Helga, Rudolf Waldemar Brem as Paul and Elga Sorbas as Rosy.

The film has a moderate reception history. Its critics' rating stands at 7.7/10 from 11 reviews, while general audiences are less enthusiastic, with 6.8/10 on IMDb from around 3,300 votes and 6.4/10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 58 votes. The gap suggests the film is valued more by reviewers than by casual viewers, and the low vote count on TMDB indicates a limited audience beyond IMDb's.
