- The flashbacks utilize rotoscoping in the style of Ralph Bakshi's work, which director James Gunn was fascinated with as a child. This was done to give the film a nostalgic Christmas spirit of the 1970s and 1980s. The filmmakers filmed actors Luke Klein, Michael Rooker, and Sean Gunn, and then traced them frame by frame, making the necessary changes to the images.
