Short description
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a 2022 television special in which the team sets out to give Peter Quill a Christmas he will not forget. Since Quill comes from Earth, his companions decide that the holiday should mean something to him, and they travel there in search of a suitable gift. Their plan involves a visit to the home of actor Kevin Bacon, who becomes an unwilling part of the celebrations.
James Gunn wrote and directed the special, which sits between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in his filmography and followed The Suicide Squad. Released on November 24, 2022, it runs 45 minutes and belongs to the adventure, comedy and science fiction genres, produced by Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige Productions and Troll Court Entertainment. Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill, with Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, and Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper providing the voices of Groot and Rocket. Thirty-five cast members and 227 crew members are credited.
The special holds a 6.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 108,000 votes and a 7.1 on TMDB from about 2,500 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 63 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The flashbacks utilize rotoscoping in the style of Ralph Bakshi's work, which director James Gunn was fascinated with as a child. This was done to give the film a nostalgic Christmas spirit of the 1970s and 1980s. The filmmakers filmed actors Luke Klein, Michael Rooker, and Sean Gunn, and then traced them frame by frame, making the necessary changes to the images.
