Misha and the Wolves

Misha and the Wolves is a documentary about a woman whose account of surviving the Holocaust as a child became an international sensation, and about how that account was later called into question. Misha Defonseca, a Belgian who had settled in the United States, described years spent wandering wartime Europe in search of her deported Jewish parents, and said that during her journey she was taken in by a pack of wolves. A publisher saw the potential in her story, and a memoir appeared in 1997, was translated into many languages, and turned its author into a familiar figure on television. A dispute with that publisher eventually put the story under scrutiny, and the search for the truth behind it uncovered matters considerably different from what readers had been told.

The film is directed by Sam Hobkinson, who also wrote the screenplay; it was produced by Al Morrow, Gregory Zalcman and Poppy Dixon. It is Hobkinson's first documentary, and he followed it chronologically with Lover, Stalker, Killer in 2024. It runs 90 minutes and was made as a co-production involving Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles.

Misha Defonseca appears as herself, and the film mixes interviews with investigative work to examine how the story reached such a wide audience before doubt was cast on it. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 3,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from a much smaller number of votes.
