Rona leaves a rehabilitation programme and returns to the Orkney Islands, the Scottish archipelago where she grew up. Now in her late twenties after more than a decade in London, where she formed and lost relationships and lived precariously, she tries to make sense of a difficult past. The wild coastal landscape draws out memories of a troubled childhood, which become entangled with the more recent events that led her towards recovery. Along the way she reconnects with people from her life on the islands, including Daynin and her father Andrew.
The film is directed by Nora Fingscheidt, her third feature after System Crasher (2019) and The Unforgivable (2021). She wrote the screenplay with Amy Liptrot and Daisy Lewis, adapting Liptrot's memoir of the same name. Saoirse Ronan plays Rona and also produces alongside Jack Lowden. The supporting cast includes Paapa Essiedu, Nabil Elouahabi, Izuka Hoyle, Lauren Lyle and Stephen Dillane. It is a co-production between Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and France, with a credited crew of 283 and 46 credited cast members.
The Outrun runs 118 minutes and was released in 2024. It has taken about 4 million USD at the worldwide box office, a modest figure for a film of its scale. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 377 votes, indicating a generally favourable but not uncritical response from that audience.
