The Counterfeiters

Based on the true story of Operation Bernhard, The Counterfeiters follows Salomon Sorowitsch, a skilled forger arrested in 1936 Berlin. After years in concentration camps, where his artistic talent helps him survive, he is transferred to Sachsenhausen and placed at the head of a secret unit of prisoners tasked with producing fake British pounds and American dollars to damage the Allied economies. Working alongside the printer Adolf Burger, Sorowitsch faces a moral dilemma: the better the group performs, the more comfortable their conditions become, yet success also aids the Nazi war effort.

Stefan Ruzowitzky wrote and directed the film, which sits between his earlier thrillers Anatomy and Anatomy 2 and the later features Deadfall and Cold Hell. Karl Markovics plays Sorowitsch, with August Diehl as Burger, Devid Striesow as Herzog, and supporting turns from Martin Brambach, August Zirner and Veit Stübner. Made for about 6 million dollars, it earned roughly 20 million worldwide.

The film holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 48,000 votes and a 7.4 on TMDB from roughly 715 votes. A critics' score of 7.8 from 126 reviews places it slightly above the audience ratings.
