Short description

Incendies follows twins Jeanne and Simon Marwan, whose mother Nawal leaves them an unusual request after her death. A notary gives them two letters: one for a father they believed was dead, and one for a brother whose existence was hidden from them. Jeanne takes the bequest as a clue to the silence that surrounded their mother in her final weeks and travels to the Middle East to uncover the family's past. Simon, distant from a mother who never showed them affection, initially refuses to take part, but his bond with his twin eventually draws him to join her. Their search takes them through the land their mother came from, a place marked by war. The film is based on Wajdi Mouawad's play of the same name.

Denis Villeneuve directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Valérie Beaugrand-Champagne. It is the fourth of the thirteen films he has directed in chronological order, arriving after Polytechnique and before Prisoners. Lubna Azabal plays Nawal, with Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin as Jeanne, Maxim Gaudette as Simon and Rémy Girard as Notary Lebel. Kim McCraw and Luc Déry produced. Made for about 7 million USD, it returned roughly 4 million USD worldwide, a modest theatrical result. Ratings are strong on IMDb at 8.3 from around 248,000 votes, and on TMDB at 8.1 from 3,473 votes. A film critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 124 reviews places critical and audience responses closely together.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the play of the same name by Wajdi Mouawad.
  • For the on-location shoots, director and screenwriter Denis Villeneuve enlisted the help of filmmakers from Iraq and Lebanon. Initially, he worried that recalling the horrors of war would be difficult for them, but he soon discovered that they were all eager to tell the world what had happened.
  • Filming took place in Canada (Montreal) and Jordan (Amman).
  • The city of Darresh, where part of the action takes place, is fictional.
  • While preparing for his role as Simon in Villeneuve's film, Maxime Godet visited Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan.
  • Finding an actress for the role eventually played by Lubna Azabal proved difficult. Denis Villeneuve reviewed numerous actresses from around the world until he saw Azabal in Hany Abu-Assad's thriller 'Paradise Now' (2005).
  • It took Denis Villeneuve five years to work on the screenplay. During that time, he directed two feature films and two short films.
