Short description
An artist, Julie, travels with her elderly mother, Rosalind, to a remote hotel in the English countryside where Rosalind spent part of her childhood, when the building was still her family's country house. The hotel is nearly empty, and Julie intends to use the quiet time with her mother to learn more about her past for a film she wants to make about her. Strange occurrences and growing tension between the two women unsettle the stay, and as Julie tries to uncover the secrets her mother appears to be keeping, painful truths come to light.
The film is written and directed by Joanna Hogg, following The Souvenir and The Souvenir: Part II, and is produced by Andrew Lowe, Ed Guiney and Hogg. Tilda Swinton plays both Julie and Rosalind, with Joseph Mydell, Carly-Sophia Davies and the dog Louis in supporting roles. It is a British and Irish production from Element Pictures, BBC Film and JWH Films, running 96 minutes.
The Eternal Daughter was released in December 2022. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 7,600 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 5.9 from a small number of ratings, indicating a modest general audience response. A film critics' rating of 7.8 from 137 reviews places critical reception noticeably higher than the audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded more warmly to the film than most viewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- The hotel in the film was formerly the home of Rosalind, Julie’s mother. After the end of World War II, due to constantly rising taxes and economic difficulties, private homes in Britain were often converted into hotels like the one shown in the film. An exception to this was the 19th-century ancestral estate of Tilda Swinton, which remained in the ownership of the Swinton family.
