The Marsh King's Daughter

Helena lives a quiet suburban life in Michigan with her husband Stephen and their young daughter, but she keeps a secret from everyone close to her. Her father is Jacob, notorious as the Marsh King, a kidnapper and convicted murderer who held Helena and her mother captive in a remote wilderness for years. Helena has spent her adult life burying that past. When Jacob escapes from prison, she realizes he may be coming for her, and that the survival skills he forced on her as a child are the only ones that might stop him. To protect her family, she sets out to track down the man who raised her.

The film is directed by Neil Burger, whose earlier features include The Illusionist, Limitless, Divergent, The Upside and Voyagers, with Inheritance following in 2025. Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith wrote the screenplay, adapted from Karen Dionne's novel. Daisy Ridley plays Helena, with Ben Mendelsohn as Jacob, Garrett Hedlund as Stephen, Caren Pistorius as Beth, Brooklynn Prince as the young Helena and Joey Carson as Marigold.

The film runs 109 minutes. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4/10 from roughly 424 votes. A critics' score of 5.5/10 from 45 reviews sits below both audience figures, suggesting viewers responded somewhat more favorably than reviewers did.
