Short description
Good Morning, Vietnam is set in Saigon in 1965, where Adrian Cronauer arrives to take over a morning slot on the radio station of the American armed forces. His fast, irreverent style and his taste in music make him an instant favourite with the enlisted men, while his superiors find his humour undisciplined and a threat to military order. The disagreement between Cronauer and Lieutenant Hauk runs through the film, set against a war that gradually changes the broadcaster's outlook.
Barry Levinson directed the film, the fifth of the twenty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, following Young Sherlock Holmes and preceding Tin Men, from a screenplay by Mitch Markowitz. Robin Williams plays Cronauer, with Forest Whitaker as Edward Garlick, Trần Thanh Tùng as Tuan, Chintara Sukapatana as Trinh, Bruno Kirby as Lieutenant Steven Hauk and Robert Wuhl as Marty Lee Dreiwitz. The credited cast numbers forty-three. Made for about 13 million dollars by Touchstone Pictures and Silver Screen Partners III, the film took roughly 124 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from about 150,585 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 3,105 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from forty-eight reviews places it close to those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Williams’ portrayal of Adrian Cronauer showed him in a somewhat different light than how things actually were. According to his biography, Cronauer himself claimed that the film was approximately 45% accurate. According to Cronauer, the film depicts him as an activist in the anti-war movement, while in reality he always protested solely against stupidity. Cronauer later became a lawyer and passed away in 2018. He was an active member of the US Republican Party and Deputy Director of the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign in 2004. Moreover, according to Cronauer himself, had he done even half of what Williams depicted, he would have been brought to trial and imprisoned.
